Take Action

Please join us in achieving our goals!

Goal 1: Share Information & Raise Awareness

Action Step: We will use this blog to inform women of issues related to birthing choices in the greater Lansing area,
Michigan, and nationally. You can help spread the word by following our blog, commenting on posts, linking to us on your Facebook page or blog and - most importantly - by talking about these issues with friends. You may also find us on Twitter: @SaferMidwifery.

Action Step: Get in touch with us! Use the contact tab to share your story, submit a question for our "Ask an OB" or "Ask a Midwife" series, or give us ideas for topics you would like to see here on the blog.

Goal 2: Advocate for Improved Standards & Safer Practices for Midwifery

Action Step: We support legislation that improves the standards of midwifery care in Michigan. You can help! Please click on this "Write to Senator Whitmer" link to download an editable, formatted letter. Just click on "file" in the upper left of the document and then select the "download" option. You can mail your letter to the address on letter or email it to: SenGWhitmer@senate.michigan.gov. Thank you for your action!

Action Step: You can also contact your own State Representative and Senator for the district in which you live to tell them that improving standards and safer practices for midwifery matters to you.  To find out who your legislators are and how to contact them, visit
Find Your Legislator.

Goal 3: Create Better Birthing Options in Greater Lansing

Action Step: We would like to see a combination of birthing options that integrates the safety of a hospital with the benefits of responsible midwifery care- in the greater Lansing area. You can write to Sparrow Hospital's CEO Dennis Swan, and encourage him to open a birthing center attached to their hospital or to collaborate with qualified midwives.   Raising awareness about a demand for change is the first step.

Please click on this letter, asking for a market analysis to evaluate interest in a collaborative care model, to suit your needs. You can mail your letter to the address on the letter or email it to:

Dennis Swan, CEO: sandra.denison@sparrow.org
Elizabeth Henry, Director of Nursing: monica.karr@sparrow.org

Goal 4:  Advocate for Improved Data Collection and Analysis as it Pertains to Out of Hospital Birth

Action Step: We are advocating for better, and more transparent, data about birthing options in the greater Lansing area. Here are two places you can write and ask that better statistics be collected (and audited).  Again, just click on the links below to download an editable, formatted letter. Thank you for your action!
